EVALUATING CHILDREN’S LITERATURE

When choosing books, it is important to be aware of materials that portray children and adults with disabilities. Things to consider are:
 

1. Does the book have an interesting plot, or is the disability the only theme?
2. Does the book deal with the whole person or just the disability?
3. Is the individual shown as a capable person, with strengths as well as needs?
4. Does the book foster positive attitudes towards others?
5. Does the book underscore similarities as well as show differences?
6. Do the pictures/graphics enhance and clarify the text?
7. Does the book raise questions that are good for discussion?
8. Can a non-reader understand the book by looking at the picture?
9. Does the book carry over-simplified generalizations or present stereotypes about individuals disabilities (i.e.: dependant, evil, objects of pity, isolated)?
10. Does the book include appropriate adult role models (i.e.: disabled, non-sexist, non-racist)?
