Canada is one of only two countries in which students showed significant improvement in both mathematics and science, according to the results of an international study released today.

"This is an important finding because one would no normally expect to see changes of this magnitude in an educational system over such a short period of time—four years," says David Robitaille, a professor of mathematics education at the University of British Columbia and Canadian director of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study-99 (TIMSS-99).
