The Farm Friends Visit Our Class

by Neha Gaba, Grade 5

On Wednesday our Farm Friends came to visit our class. We had the best time ever! My Farm Friend is Charlotte. Manjot, Angelica and Aman are in my group but Aman was not here. First, we played human bingo. There were some questions like; who has been to New Zealand, who has used a digital camera, who plays a musical instrument, who has an older brother, who has a birthday in January, who has been to India, who uses MSN and who is older than 55. We didn’t have much time so I never got all of my questions but I had fun!

fter everyone was all sitting down we started to review the Planning to Plant papers. Mr. Bell reviewed some important things to think about while planning out gardens. We talked about the seasons, when to plant and when to harvest and about harvesting, location, size, sun, companions, diversity and beauty.

After, we discussed what kind of plants we wanted in our garden. We had to pick 10 plants that could be harvested in June and at least 5 that could be harvested in the summer. If the plant was big we had to plant to put an “N” beside the name on the list, so we would know to plant it on the North side. Later on that day we picked 3 companion plants for our garden bed. There should be 2 varieties of each plant.

We stayed in at recess because everyone was working so hard. Mr. Bell passed around some sunchokes that Charlotte brought. I thought they tasted ok. We had a diagram on which to draw our garden bed so we would know where every plant goes. We were finally done but there was one thing left to do. We had to order seeds of the plants we wanted to plant in our garden bed. Before the farm friends left we sang Betcha Going Fishing and Where Do the Children Play. Some farm friends sang with us. I had a blast!
