Theme 9. The Story of Soil Formation and Soil Nutrients |
|
| |
|
|
| |
|
Rationale:
The Landed Learning Project strives to provide young people with the knowledge and experiences to make informed choices about food consumption. Water is essential to all living things. Minerals that all living things need to grow flow into the food chain by becoming solutions. Water is also necessary to many of life’s processes such as photosynthesis. The minerals and chemicals that enter our water system also enter the food chain, so we must be careful to protect our water sources.

We are lucky to have an irrigation system that allows us to correctly and evenly water our beds with clean water without having to carry it ourselves. Diverting clean water to grow plants is difficult work in many parts of the world where drought, pollution, and lack of resources are present. |

Student Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to:
- Explain the role of water in plant growth (transporting nutrients in solution)
- Explain the ideal conditions for soil to absorb water (loose soil for water to move through, evenly watered…never too wet or to dry)
- Differentiate between the amounts of water needed in small pots vs. large gardens
- Demonstrate correct and even watering of plants in greenhouse (with spray bottle) and in gardens (with watering can, without flooding)
- Describe how water absorption is limited by incorrect watering
- Demonstrate care for the irrigation system that allows us to correctly and evenly water our garden beds without having to carry water.
- Thin crops by pinching off those spaced too close together to allow for healthy growing.
