Theme 7. Signs of Spring: Weeding

Rationale:

The Landed Learning Project strives to provide young people with the knowledge and experiences to make informed choices about food consumption. Gardeners make many choices about which plants to cultivate and which to remove. Much work goes into the cultivation of healthy plants so that they do not have to compete for sun, water, and soil nutrients. By understanding why and how we select and remove plants from our gardens, students can understand why herbicides are sometimes used, learn about the impact of herbicides, and also learn about and practice organic weed control methods

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to

  • define weeds and describe why they are unwanted in our gardens
  • explain what resources plants compete for
  • describe the pros and cons of using herbicides
  • explain why herbicides are not used in organic gardening and demonstrate organic weed control methods
  • identify and remove root systems from unwanted plants while protecting the roots of wanted plants
