Theme 6. Healthy Plants: Roots and Shoots

Rationale:

The Landed Learning Project strives to provide young people with the knowledge and experiences to make informed choices about food consumption. By learning about the parts of the plants that are necessary for the plant to thrive, students can build the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully care for living things and grow healthy foods.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to

  • screen and add compost when planting to increase soil nutrients to be absorbed by roots
  • name different types of roots: taproots and fibrous roots
  • describe the purpose of roots
  • demonstrate care for root systems and healthy plants during transplanting and other garden work
