Theme 5. SOWING the SEED: Plant Propagation

Rationale:

The Landed Learning Project strives to provide young people with the knowledge and experiences to make informed choices about food consumption. Growing plants requires knowledge about plant propagation in order to increase plant yield and grow healthy plants. Students will support plant growth by planting by both seed and tuber, by properly spacing seeds, by giving seeds/seedlings the air, water, temperature, and sunlight that they need to grow, and by building a trellis to maximize garden space and help pea plants grow strong.

Student Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to:

  • identify different ways in which plants are propagated (Sexual reproduction: From seeds-most of our plants. Asexual propagation: From tuber-potatoes and sunchokes, layering-strawberries)
  • propagate plants from seed and tuber
  • describe the conditions that seeds need to germinate
  • explain the purpose of a trellis
  • build a trellis to support pea plants.
  • demonstrate proper seeding technique (re: spacing, depth, soil compaction, and water)
