Theme 4. PREPARING for PLANTING: orientation, spacing, and companion planting.

Rationale:

The Landed Learning Project strives to provide young people with the knowledge and experiences to make informed choices about food consumption. Although the garden slows down in the wintertime, some plants are still alive and there is much work to be done to prepare to plant. Maximizing our space and time by gardening through Vancouver’s mild winters allows us to have productive gardens in the spring.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to

  • share the name of their Farm Friend group
  • explain the difference between direct seeding and transplanting
  • make a newspaper pot to start a seedling
  • provide a seed the conditions it needs to grow by potting a seed (enough soil, planting not too deep, keeping in greenhouse for warmth, and watering)
  • correctly space seeds according to their planting instructions.
  • use fingers as measuring tools
  • carefully prune plants
