Message from the Department Head, Professor Dennis J. Sumara
I am very pleased to welcome you to the website of the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia. Our mission is to provide local, national, and international leadership in discipline-specific and interdisciplinary research in curriculum and pedagogy. Our faculty members and graduate students conduct research into the diverse ways people develop experiences of personal, social, and cultural learning through engagements with one another, with human-made artifacts, and with the more-than-human world.
We offer graduate programs in curriculum studies and in art, music, mathematics, science, technology, social studies, home economics and physical education. Within these program areas, students have opportunities to study a wide variety of topics including, for example, curriculum theory; curriculum design & evaluation; internationalization of curriculum; teacher education; scholarship of learning and teaching in post-secondary settings; studies in historical consciousness; gender, race and sexuality studies in curriculum; museum and visitor education; human movement & health education; outdoor education; instructional and communication technologies; pedagogical interface design; aesthetic experience and curriculum; complexity science and education; and arts-based educational research.
We offer undergraduate courses with a curriculum and pedagogy focus in several areas including science, mathematics, social studies, technology, art, music, business, home economics and physical education. As well, we teach the core Principles of Teaching course to all undergraduate students enrolled in the teacher education program.
Underlying all of our research and teaching interests is a commitment to studies of curriculum and pedagogy in a variety of settings, including K–12 classrooms, college and university contexts, urban settings, cyberspaces, alternative school contexts, teacher education contexts, and informal settings such as museums, aquariums, science centres and art galleries.
Faculty members in our Department lead or co-lead several research centres in the Faculty of Education including the Centre for the Study of Historical Consciousness, the Centre for the Study of the Internationalization of Curriculum and Pedagogy, and the Centre for the Study of Teacher Education. Our Department is home for two Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs and for the David Robitaille Chair in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education.
Our goal is to make UBC's Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy a world leader in innovative research and teaching within and across disciplinary domains. We invite you to explore our programs and research and the rich environment of research, service and teaching that is Curriculum and Pedagogy at UBC. |
